What I think: Into the Wild- Jon Krakauer's Writing Style

Before continuing, I'd like to point out that you shouldn't view my personal opinions of the novel as concrete, and I would recommend anyone to read this novel themselves to form their own opinion.

NOTE: I did not  finish the entire novel, though I read half and watched summary videos, which is why I will only be commenting on the writing style- not the story.

Author of Into the Wild, Jon Krakauer draws in readers from all over with his unique writing-style and interesting story. The book itself is unlike any I’ve personally read in my life.  Structured anachronistically and continuously throwing massive amounts of information not only about the man the book is about, but places he’d visited, Into the Wild gives readers an experience similar to reading a very drawn out article.

For the majority of the book, he sticks to an informative tone, using logical analysis’ seemingly in order to make McCandless's story as clear as possible. He presents a body of evidence to support all of his claims by interviewing McCandless’ family and anyone he came in contact with while traveling. While the evidence he presents is an effective way to give a thorough and well-thought out story, the switching off from giving what feels like an unnecessary amount of information about places Chris McCandless visited, to McCandless’ actual actions can at times be confusing and almost tedious. I found the parts of the book where Krakauer inserts himself into the narrative to be frustrating as a reader and useless to the story.

For those reasons, I found the novel to be a difficult read, though Chris McCandless’ character nearly makes the read redeemable. His unique style is one I appreciate, but am not a personal fan of.
